“Where are you off to?” I asked. “I’m sorry, are you my daddy now?” “In every single one of my dreams.”
“Mary,” I warned. “Don’t even think about it.” “Leo,” she pleaded, her bottom lip protruding as she held the cat up for me to get a better view. “Just look at her.” “I see her, and I’ll say it again — don’t even think about it.” Fifteen minutes later, I was pulling into a parking spot next to Mary. At a fucking pet store.
“You want to know what you have to offer me?” I asked. “Todo. Everything. A chance to start over. A chance to be myself. A chance to have what I’ve always wanted. You offer laughter and adventure, spontaneity and challenge, life,” I said. “You infuriate me,” I added with a smile. “In the best possible way. You make me want to be better, and you make me mad with the need to touch every inch of you until I can map your body out with my eyes closed.”
“Leo Hernandez, a believer in fate?” “If fate is what brought you to me, I’m not only a believer — I’m a worshiper.”
“Mary!” He gasped. “Palico!” That caused a scuffle behind him, and then Braden and Blake were flanking his sides, all battling to fill the screen. “Palico!” Braden and Blake said in unison, and then they were all fussing over the cat, telling it how much they missed
I looked back up to Mary in the stands. She had my number on her chest. And my heart in her hands.
“Forever,” I answered softly. Leo pulled back on a smile. “With me?” “And Palico.”
