free from the shackles of my mundane life. I woke up, went to a job I hated, came home, and did it all over again the next day.
“Well, sorry to disappoint, but you’re in Eden,” he explains, interrupting my train of thought about his office décor.
There are seven departments: Heaven, Hell, Soul Directory, Reaper’s Resources, Collection, IT and—most recently formed—Reaper’s Court. I work for the Collection department. One of our responsibilities is to collect souls.”
“Not yet. I brought you here because I need you to do something for me.”
“I’m glad you asked.” His grin widens. “I need you to be my lawyer.”
my client is screwed, and we haven’t even presented our case yet.
Especially, since I know the sick bastard is actually guilty.
My infatuation with him was quick and consuming, but it had ended just as quickly as it started.
even then, I would first ask Jesus what he was smoking up there.
“Joyce.
My boss consistently assigns me cases with the worst type of people.
I can throw a mean right hook. He was on the other end of it when I caught him cheating with my former best friend.
All the good men must have died out or are hiding from me.
quitting. I am. I hate my job. I hate being a lawyer. Screw it!
I decide on a pastel blue suit and nude heels. It makes a statement. Bright colors in a courthouse as a lawyer is usually a big no, but I no longer care, so why not leave the legal field with a bang?
“On the count of first-degree murder, the jury finds Thomas Reynolds…guilty.”
“If I’m going down, you’re coming with me, Joyce!”
Before I can process the sound, I feel a burning sensation in my chest.
For goodness sake, I can’t even die properly.
But when it seems as though he is about to run full force into me, he runs right through me.
Correction: a scrumptious tall man wearing an all-black suit.
And that’s how I met the most aggravating man that I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with in my afterlife.
Why would the Grim Reaper need a lawyer?
He does not have sufficient evidence to say that I am going to Hell. What have I done to deserve this?
“We assign people to Heaven or Hell based on good karma and bad karma.
includes intent.
You used to be set for Heaven, but then your bad karma started to outweigh your good karma.
“You understand if you do not accept the role as my lawyer, you’re going to Hell.”
He’s got the serious model face thing going for him.
That rat bastard.
The Grim Reaper placed me in an excruciating Hell. I’m living out the day I died, repeatedly.
He finally speaks, “You were there for five minutes. It felt like a month because time goes slower there.”
I may be stubborn, but I’m not all the way stupid.
The Reaper’s Court,
filed a charge against me for breaking some rules that I didn't mean to break.
now I’m questioning if you’re a good lawyer. You didn’t even read the contract.”
is that Hell Standard Time or Eastern Standard Time?”
He sighs in annoyance. “Do you always talk this much?”
Interesting. “So, it’s essentially slavery?”
Without us, Eden wouldn’t function.”
“Who’s Joey, exactly?” “He is another reaper in the Collection department. I’m his supervisor, but we are close friends.
People aren’t born with a death date; it is determined by the flow of events in their life.
I preferred a non-reaper because of the office politics involved.
Director Taevian burst into my office. He told me I made a mistake and assigned the wrong death to the wrong sister.
“I know a fantastic soul food restaurant in a small town in North Carolina.”
“Okay. I need all the details. What is Aiden like? No one is really close to him.
“But is a man being hot enough to counteract his stiff personality?
I swear he is like a sour patch kid.
“Does any reaper have access to that information?”
