The welts on his palm hovered over the top of my wrist . . . shaking. His swallow was barely audible as he shut his eyes tight and grazed the top of my skin with the balm. I did not dare look back after that. I couldn’t. Not when I saw how far the welts traveled up underneath his sleeves.
“We cannot fail. It is too risky. I refuse to let anything happen to you—I won’t.”
With as much fight as she had in her veins, she could take anything she wanted; happiness included. I wanted to tell her I understood its familiarity; her sadness that called me to remember my own.
Even if I was not the one to share it with her, because someone like me could not hold such a breakable thing as happiness. I shattered it, every time.
“I would give anything,” I whispered, fading into the night. To see you smile like that again.
“But I am quite fond of the way you are looking at me right now.”
“Darling, if you wanted it easy, I would give it to you that way,” he said, winking at me as he prepared his own stance. “But we all know that’s not what you want.”
“After the act. Not before. If that’s what she chooses. As for them. . . Well, they slept with my wife. I was going to murder them, regardless. Might as well do it quickly.”
I am selfish, and I promise to hold myself to that torture when I do you wrong, because I cannot learn to be something I am not. I cannot stop myself from being jealous. Not when others have the privilege of knowing you so freely, without the pressures of what we have been placed under. I felt threatened of that the moment I saw you.”
please know it is your happiness in the end that I want. Even if it is with someone else.”
“Forgive me, my enchantress.” He lowered his voice further. “For I may not be able to subdue thoughts no gentlemen should ever be allowed to have. You have given me too much to think about while away.”
“You will not beg anyone, for anything, ever again. You will take what you want, and you will not feel sorry for it.”
“Which one is it, my little liar? Or I will make sure that no one else in this room survives the night.”
