“Did the spider steal your shirt?” “Most women wouldn’t complain.” “I see the breaking of your throne hasn’t damaged your ego.”
But my thoughts about Ava were their own kind of madness, and she’d already rendered me senseless.
“Now that,” he murmured into the crook of my neck, “sounds like a fucking challenge, changeling.”
A ghost of sorrow crossed his perfect features. “Ava. I thought of you all the time in my cell. How much I wanted you next to me, your limbs entwined with mine.”
“In Faerie, I will freeze anyone that I love, Ava. I will kill anyone that I love. That’s what Queen Mab cursed me with. And that’s why you can’t come with me, my changeling.”
“You have more power than you think, Lost One, and the only way for you to survive is to learn how to use it. I want you to survive. But strength only comes through pain. Do you understand?”
Something wasn’t adding up about her speech. On the surface, it seemed like she was trying to protect the king from their anger at his absence, to give them another scapegoat. And the people you called demons for the past several hundred years were a perfect scapegoat.
This was the last moment his primal, earthy magic would twine around me. I needed to memorize the feel of him, the smell of him. Because when he left, I’d be living in a world of shadows.
“Ava.” My name on his tongue was a hoarse groan that lit my blood on fire. “I would tear my own kingdom apart for you if it meant we could be together.” He pressed his mouth against mine in a devouring kiss.
“Ava, you have made me thoroughly undone in every possible way. I am returning to my kingdom a ruined man. But with you, I don’t think I have a choice. You’re a command I can’t refuse.”
“Faeries, come take me out of this dull world, For I would ride with you upon the wind, Run on the top of the disheveled tide, And dance upon the mountains like a flame.”
As I raced toward the castle, I spied a figure with black wings like a moth’s. My world tilted. Ava, my love, what the fuck are you doing?
I have been dreaming for a long time of feeding you apples in my room.”
I would always feel safe with him. I was once a lost changeling, but he was my home.
