With no sheet music in front of me, I play Élégie, and I’m transported to another place for the next few minutes. I’m free. My eyes are closed, and a slow tear falls as I perform my favorite piece. Chad said to play for myself, but I’m playing for Mom, who also loves this heart-wrenching composition. I’m playing for the woman who gave up her family, her past, her homeland, for me. The woman who works tirelessly so I can pursue my dreams.
“You were in tune. You played each note perfectly. But I’d like to hear a little more longing.” Chad nods, his mouth pressed. “Take your time. Think of that kiss and how you’d want it to last,” Mrs. Strayer suggests. Chad looks over at me and I’m about to fall over. “One more time, Mr. David.” With his violin tucked under his chin, his eyes sealed, Chad’s determination shines. Not only do I hear the longing in the music, I feel it. He’s playing the song my heart’s been singing since I first met him.
