at LaGuardia Arts. I fell in love with you in that auditorium. I helped him pick out the comfortable navy sofa and the two end tables. The large bookcase, extending from one end of the room to the other, brims with books and vinyl. His favorite record player sits proudly on a stand, playing Art of Noise’s “The Seduction of Claude Debussy.” The grand piano is still by the window where I stood and stared for months while he was away. Several manuscripts sit atop the bench. Two music stands remind me of all the duets we played together. It’s been nine months since Chad and I saw each other. I’m ready to leave our unbearable time apart behind. “I’ve missed you,” Chad says, hugging me tightly. “I missed you too.” He unfolds me from his arms and leads me to the sofa. He looks delicious dressed in his usual uniform of white t-shirt, jeans and Chucks. Tattoos the color of midnight are on display and his jaw is covered in scruff. “You’re finally back,” I say, taking a seat next to him. “I am.” “So, the New World Philharmonic made you conductor emeritus?’ “Yes, it was an unexpected offer. One that made me feel like I’m a hundred years old.” “You should be proud,” I say. “Not only did you help form the orchestra, you’ve made it one of the best.” “Yeah, but—” I shake my head. “Be proud.” I smile. “I am.” “It’s going to be weird not managing a hundred musicians,” he says exhaustedly. “I have some concerts coming up, so I won’t be a complete bum.” Bum or not, I don’t want to put our lov...
