Her finger goes to the starfish on my chest, the one right over my heart. Then she leans in. “Are those my initials?” she asks, tracing the lines of the letters.
“I know you might not ever want the same things that I want. And that’s okay. I don’t want to pressure you, ever, to do something you’re not comfortable with. But I’m never going anywhere. And there will never be another woman for me besides you.”
“It might take me a while to figure out how to do all of this, but I trust you.” Then she kisses me.
I would have waited my whole life for this woman’s love, but just like she always does, she surprises me.
“I still don’t understand why you have to do this. Your skin is perfect as it is. Flawless,” I say.
“I want to do this,” Emmy reminds me.
I rake my fingers through my hair and blow out a breath. But I stay where they told me to stand. Over in the corner of the room so I can’t see any details. I stare at my brother sitting on his stool leaning over my love, tattoo gun in hand.
He’s taught me so much in the few months we’ve been an official couple. Some people in town said they thought we’d been a couple for years. All that time I couldn’t envision it myself—wouldn’t let myself, and half the dang town thought it was already true.
It’s a game we play sometimes because the truth of the matter is, my love is the sweetest man in the world. He might look like a bad boy, but he has the most gentle heart, which is just what I need.
“Say you’ll be my wife, Starfish. Put me out of my misery and marry me. Take me forever so I can take you forever.”
“You do. And yes, of course I’ll marry you. I’d like nothing better than to become your wife.”
“You take such good care of me,” I say. “Always and forever.”
