I raise my eyebrows when I see Malaki slipping out. Whelp. Temper bagged the Lord of Dreams all right.
“Is there any way I could see the Flora Kingdom’s sleeping women?” His brows furrow. “I could ask…” I suck in my lower lip. “Would you?” He studies me for a moment longer. Finally, he nods. “Consider it done.”
“There is no use trying to talk sense to this man. He and his wife kill kids.”
“I told you I’d give you the stars for that laugh.”
“He took me,” I whisper. “He was the one who took me. From your house. He took me to Karnon.”
“What’s a mate challenge?” I ask Malaki. He frowns. “If a rival fairy disputes a bond, they can challenge a mate to a duel. It’s an old tradition, mostly used to either show off the worth of the mate being contended over or as an insult if an outside fairy doesn’t think one of the mates is worthy of the other. Most of the time it’s simply a way for mates—usually male ones—to work off their aggression and establish their claim.”
“When I was conceived,” he continues, “he was killing off all his children. The adults, the kids, even the babies.”
“At first, I thought you walked out on me,” he says. “I thought you took off the way I had so many times back when you were in high school. In the days that followed, I wished you had. “It was the full cup of coffee that changed everything. It was just sitting there on the patio table, still full. You of all people wouldn’t just leave a cup of coffee untouched.”
“Cherub, our bond…has issues.”
“Des and I aren’t officially soul mates.”
“He’s huge,” Temper says, flopping onto the bed next to me. “But, you know, just the right amount of huge.”
“Don’t make the same mistake he did. Stay the fuck away from my mate, or I will kill you, just as I did the mad king.”
I haven’t been using birth control. Des hasn’t been wearing condoms. Fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck. What sort of loser just forgets about these things? It’s a trick question because obviously this bitch right here is the loser who does.
“My, my,” she says, “how much you and Desmond have in common. No wonder he’s so smitten with you. A woman after his own heart.”
You’re safe, and thanks to those wings of yours, Desmond has ensured you cannot leave his side to return to earth.”
“And perhaps you should explain to your human mate why you refuse this most sacred and arcane of lovers’ rights. Or why she will die a mortal when she could’ve lived at your side for eons.”
“They gave their human lovers lilac wine, and flesh that should’ve aged became ageless, and magic that was once imperfect became perfect. Two species became one.”
“Only if you drink the lilac wine will our bond be complete. Only then can we freely share our magic.”
