Among the examples of normalization is the promotion of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, or SADS. That’s “when a person under the age of 40 years old suffers a sudden death without a known cause.” In other words, when circumstances and even autopsy cannot identify a cause of death, let’s label that mystery SADS. Let’s pretend SADS is a syndrome or a health condition when it’s actually “an umbrella term to describe unexpected deaths in young people.” It’s a term, not an explanation – used when there is no explanation.
