She screamed as I grabbed her by the arms and pulled her toward the pit. Her spiked heels caught my shin a few times as she fought against my hold, but the struggle was brief. I tossed her over the edge, her screams lasting mere seconds as she fell. Flames flared around her body as she hit the lava pool and was consumed.
“I know, but that’s not realistic. Not for me.” My heart ached. It was unspoken, but I knew Kaden didn’t love me, nor did I love him. All Gabby wanted was the best for me, the same things I wanted for her, and it broke me. “Hey, look at me.” When she did, I continued, “I don’t regret it, you know? Not a second of
The mortals spoke all at once again, arguing and agreeing with each other. I pressed my fingers against my brow, the pain in my head growing with each beat of my heart. It was worse now than before, an overwhelming pressure starting at the top of my neck and radiating through my skull. A thousand voices echoed through my mind, demanding answers and help from me.
“Oh, don’t pretend to want to understand me. You and I are nothing alike,” she snapped, launching at me once more. She did not stop, no matter how many times I blocked her or sent her flying off her feet. She was fierce, using any object around her to her advantage. Silver liquid ran from his eyes, then from his nose and mouth. The room darkened and shook. We stood rooted in place as the building blew away. Screams and roars ripped through the air. Orange lightning danced between billowing yellow clouds.
“I apologize. There are just too many people here, and I can hear all of them. It’s overwhelming.” He sat on the edge of the couch and blew out a long breath. “And this palace of theirs seems too dense and tight. It’s as if the walls themselves are trying to close in around me. You seem to be the only one I can stand to be around.”
Don’t be the one to make her fall if you have no intention of catching her.”
Dianna laughed, and I felt like I had been punched in the gut. I hated the way they smiled at one another. I wondered if she thought of his perfectly flawless skin and dreamed of touching it. Would he let her if she asked? It was not like mine, marred and scarred from the battles fought throughout my lifetime. Sure, I might have been taller, and my muscle definition was more pronounced than his, but I would never be the flawless creature he was.
