“Better to die by what you think is right than to live under a lie.”
We can’t live in the past, D. Nothing grows there.”
Henry was gone, and in his place was the woman from the photos. They had not done her justice. The grainy images had not captured the extraordinariness of her.
I swiped my blade upward as she passed me. She took one step, then another, before stopping. I turned and flicked the blood from my blade as her arm fell to the floor with a thud. She hissed and grabbed where it had once been. “That was a hundred-dollar jacket, you asshole!” she spat, looking at her ruined clothes, unconcerned with the missing limb. “Excuse me?”
I could see why they called him the most beautiful son of Unir, and how he could have brought even goddesses to their knees. He was every bit as magnificent as the books had described.
“If you wanted me on my hands and knees, you should have just asked,”
“Does the ground frequently shake here?” I quietly asked Gabby behind me. She shook her head. “That’s not a quake. That’s my sister.” The words had barely left her lips when flames burst through the floor.
merely shrugged as he leaned back, all power and arrogance. Most women would want to climb him like a tree in that position, but I was imagining stabbing him again.
I wouldn’t be conscious much longer. Sophie leaned down, looking at me with a smug smile as she waved. “Night night, bitch.” Then the door exploded with a loud boom, the ground shaking as shards of wood erupted into the room. Sophie’s eyes went wide, and she lifted the crossbow, aiming it above me. She had no time to pull the trigger before an invisible force sent her flying. Liam stepped over me as the room flickered in and out of focus.
Well, if I was dead, at least I would be comfortable and fashionable while I haunted people.
I was so sick of dealing with men and their egos.
She was my enemy, yet my enemy was the only one who seemed to understand me and the demons I fought.
“Now who is the cocky one?” “Oh, trust me, big guy, I have nothing on you.” He smirked at me
“I can go in alone.” “No,” he snapped, and then cringed at the pitch of his own voice. “No. You promised you would not leave me.
I tipped my head back and laughed, the sound unfettered and full. When I finally got control of myself again, I wiped the tears from my eyes with my free hand and grinned at him. He was watching me with the oddest expression on his face. “I have never heard you laugh like that,” he said, a smile tugging at his lips.
“Is this the part where we pretend you’re not?” He shook his head, his gaze snagging on my lips as I swept my tongue across them. I sighed, giving in. “Yeah, you know. Attractive, good-looking, desirable.” That seemed to click in his godly brain, because the corner of his mouth twitched. “Especially when you smile.” He shook his head and chuckled, the sound a velvet caress along my skin. Liam was lethal in more ways than one. “You call me one thing, then another. Your opinion changes like the wind.” “Oh, trust me, my opinion has not changed. I mean, you did look terrible for a while there.

She claimed everyone was staring at me, but I had noticed every eye that lingered upon her since we entered this obnoxious place. At last count, it was forty-five—no, wait, there was another, make it forty-six. I told myself I was only keeping track for safety reasons, nothing more.
He counted the amount of people who stared at her! While he claims he doesn’t have feelings for her!
“I promise to make sure Gabby is safe. I also promise that he will never lay a hand on you again. If he even tries to take you away, I promise I’ll make him regret ever being born.”
I didn’t remember how long we talked, but somewhere amidst her laughter and smiles, I decided I would rip the world apart for her. When she had turned into me and wrapped her arms around my chest, the world had slipped away. It was a brief reprieve as I held her body curled against mine. It was a moment of peace—until
“You already consume my every waking thought. Must you consume my dreams as well?”
My eyes met her hazel gaze, and I knew the moment would be branded in my memory long after I had turned to stardust.
“I have only been around you two for mere minutes, but I see the way you look at each other.
His words hissed to a stop, and I knew exactly why. As the roiling heat of Liam’s power appeared in the closet with us, my sorrow, fear, and regret no longer felt overwhelming. The ache in my chest eased, allowing me to breathe easier. “Am I interrupting something?” I jerked from Drake’s touch and cringed, knowing Liam would see it as a sign of guilt and believe there was something between Drake and me. “Do you knock?” Drake asked, dropping his hand. “Not when she sounds distressed.” Liam’s voice thundered behind me, the lights in my room flickering ominously.
thoughts. He stopped mid-step, his gaze traveling slowly up and down my body. His voice was both husky and outraged when he finally said, “That’s what you are wearing?” I held my arms out and looked down. “What’s wrong with my dress?” He looked genuinely confused for a moment. “Dress? That is not a dress. You look as though you plan to bed him immediately after dinner.” My mouth dropped open. “Excuse me? I am not bedding anyone, you ancient jerk!” I gestured toward the dress I wore, the hem riding high on my thighs. “You can’t even see anything.” “You see enough. It’s practically an insult.” I

He was watching me as I spun. He always watched me, especially when he thought I wasn’t looking.
You seem to be the only one I can stand to be around.”
I moved my knee underneath the table, lightly bumping Liam’s. The brief contact shook him from the grasp of his rising anger and grief. He looked at me, and his eyes softened as he held my gaze. He released a breath, and the room stilled.
Don’t be the one to make her fall if you have no intention of catching her.”
The pounding in my head was too much for me to stop. I needed air. I needed Dianna.
Because I have every part of you memorized.
“And you are a dead man if you lay a hand on her.”
Pure blind rage consumed me as I looked at him. I had never felt the desire to shred a being with my bare hands. He would die screaming for what he’d done to her.
was impressed, but I was always impressed with her. My mouth turned down in a frown as I realized she didn’t need my help after all.
I wanted to claim her as mine.
I knew nothing of love, but I knew I wanted her, needed her, and dreamed of her. It was the most inappropriate and irresponsible thing I could ever want for myself. I just wanted to feel, and a single touch from her set my body alight. I wanted her hands on every part of me, and I wanted it more than I had ever wanted anything. It was the most selfish desire in the world, but I wanted her more than a crown, more than a throne, more than air. I had confirmation that the Book of Azrael existed and the threat of war loomed, but all my thoughts centered on Dianna. Camilla was correct. She had

I had slain creatures the size of stars, yet this fiery, headstrong woman made me nervous.
The old ones spoke of absolute peace beyond worlds, beyond realms, and when I held Dianna, I felt it.
She snorted. “I am no warrior.” “Yes, you are. Along with being brave, stubborn, crass, and volatile, you are one of the strongest people I know. You fight me on everything. Which is saying a lot, considering everyone trembles when I enter the room.” She chuckled and closed her eyes. “Hey, look at me. You would have to be an ignorant fool not to think you are anything but extraordinary, Dianna.”
Her lips slanted over mine, and for the first time in my entire existence, I froze. Her kiss was light, tantalizing—and everything I never knew I had been missing. She pulled back and looked up at me, her fingers tracing the line of my jaw. A slow, mischievous smile curved her lips. “You still have witch breath.” Something snapped in me, and I was afraid it was my self-control. Desire coiled and burned in me, and I let it. “Then fix it,” I dared, throwing down the challenge.
I may not have the words to do justice to her or what I was feeling, but I knew if she would let me, I would happily spend a millennium trying.
A part of my soul had been waiting for this woman,
“If we weren’t so preoccupied with finding this book, I would show you in seven different ways how much it does not affect how I feel about you.”
Liam grasped my arm and slowed his pace, letting Ava and Geraldo move a few paces ahead. He leaned over, his voice a hot whisper against my ear and low enough that no mortal could hear. “‘Friend’?” he hissed through gritted teeth. “… What?” I asked, confused. I glanced at him, then toward Ava and Geraldo, who kept walking. Then it clicked: he was pissed about me calling him my friend earlier.
