“Do I know you?” I asked at the same time. My senses had gone on alert, an odd but familiar feeling twisting my gut.
“‘Friend’?” he hissed through gritted teeth. “… What?” I asked, confused. I glanced at him, then toward Ava and Geraldo, who kept walking. Then it clicked: he was pissed about me calling him my friend earlier. “That’s eight ways now, because when we leave here, I’m going to fuck the word friend out of your vocabulary.”
when we leave here, I’m going to fuck the word friend out of your vocabulary.”
Yup, she annoyed me, but something was off. I felt it. I knew it. My instincts were on high alert, telling me I had to protect Liam, but I didn’t know why.
“Well, that explains why we couldn’t get it open the last few times we tried. I mean, we burned through a lot of celestials.”
“Is that what your father told you?” Tobias clicked his tongue. “Your family is full of liars, Samkiel. Too bad you won’t be around to figure that out.”
“Liam,” I said, not caring if the dead or Tobias heard me, “you have to leave. You get to the book, you take it, and go. We are not both going to make it out of this temple alive.”
here. You’re pissed, but I didn’t ask you to save me. I gave my life so that you and everyone else would have theirs.”
I only wished to save you. All of you.”
“I love you, Samkiel. Be better than us.”
I concentrated on Logan, trying to summon a connection with him. The familiar tug was there, but then it stopped. Strange—that had never happened before. I tried again, but ran up against a wall that my power could not penetrate.
“Neverra is with them both. I think she spoke of coffee or something. I made a few other celestials go with them. Regardless of if Gabby likes them, I don’t. I don’t know what it is, but I don’t want to leave the girls alone with them for too long. And if what you said about the Four Kings still being alive is true, well then, they can’t be trusted.”
She had sacrificed herself for me, for the world, and I’d resurrected her without a second thought. My own father would not bring back my mother, the one person he had loved with every atom of his being.
I was as selfish and weak as they claimed, because I hadn’t brought her back for the world, or even for her. I brought her back because I didn’t think I could exist without her.
“Secrets are long buried in your family, World Ender. Long before your creation. The celestial of death had a master—a master who foretold of the great demise. The texts you seek were written and hidden to maintain balance, for if the realms bleed, chaos will return.”
“The prophecy remains. One falls, one rises, and the end begins. It was foretold and will remain. One carved from darkness, one carved from light. The world will shudder.” I felt the room quake as Liam’s power seeped from him. “Was this all part of another godsdamned test?”
“There will be a shuddering crack, an echo of what is lost and what cannot be healed. Then, Samkiel, you will know this is how the world ends.”
“That is just it, Dianna. To me, you are worth it—and that makes me the most selfish bastard and the most dangerous god to ever exist. I did it in a second, without thinking or worrying about the consequences, and I would do it again and again.
I watched as he joined Ethan and a dark-haired woman I assumed was Ethan’s wife—the wife who had been too busy to greet us while we were staying in Zarall. The pieces started to click together, and I didn’t like the picture they made. Had they sold Dianna out for the wife?
“Do you like the present Drake brought me, Dianna? He even snagged me a member of The Hand,” he said as a deadly smile curved his features. He squeezed Gabby’s face as he stared at the camera. “Say hello to big sister, now.”
