My Dianna.
I appreciate you. Truly.”
“Shut up. I am always a delight,”
when we leave here, I’m going to fuck the word friend out of your vocabulary.”
It was Liam—annoying, beautiful, rude Liam. He’d told me of his nightmares, his past. He’d made me stupid dresses and given me flowers. He’d saved my life and kept me from being dragged back to Kaden. He saw me—the real me—and didn’t turn away. He had healed me. I didn’t know when it had happened, but he was mine, and I would tear anyone who so much as touched him to pieces. I owed him that, at least.
It was a dance I didn’t know I knew.
“I’m not leaving you.”
“Maybe in another
“Tricked you,” I whispered as his knee dug into my ribs. “You lose.”
Liam’s armor disappeared, as if seeing me like this made him vulnerable in more ways than one.
He’d saved me. He always saved me.
You willingly try to throw yours away as if it means nothing. As if you mean nothing.”
“Father,” Liam whispered, “do not leave me.
“I love you, Samkiel. Be better than us.”
“It is Oblivion. The purest form of the ever after. I created it out of agony, grief, and regret after my mother died. Her death was close to my ascension. They say you must go in with a clear mind when you forge your weapon. I did not. Sorrow is a powerful emotion, and one gods cannot afford to feel, much less express. It is the same with love. It makes even the most powerful of us rash, erratic, and unpredictable.”
“I would love to see the stars from here. I want to know if it’s just as pretty as in your dreams.”
“I am unsure of what you could be, if I am being a hundred percent honest. You surprise me and are unlike anything I have ever experienced. So, to answer your question, I do not know.” “That was nice.” A small smile formed on my lips. “Sort of.” “I’m a nice guy.”
“The prophecy remains. One falls, one rises, and the end begins. It was foretold and will remain. One carved from darkness, one carved from light. The world will shudder.”
“That is just it, Dianna. To me, you are worth it—and that makes me the most selfish bastard and the most dangerous god to ever exist. I did it in a second, without thinking or worrying about the consequences, and I would do it again and again. What I feel for you is overwhelming, and I cannot stop it. I do not know what I am doing. Do you understand that? I have the weight of the entire universe on my shoulders. I had a plan, and then you crashed into my life, making me ignore all reason. You make me trek through Onuna, taking me to places with loud music and overly sugary treats. You make me

your father saw something in you that needed to be saved. Unir saw a future, and whatever it was, he believed with his entire being that you would make it a reality. Your friends see the worth in you. It’s why they are so loyal, why they love you, even now. You saved them without knowing it. You gave them a purpose beyond just following. They would follow you into Iassulyn, because you gave them a choice. You gave them free will and a reason to be. I’ve seen the memories, Liam. I get that you think you’ve failed, but you haven’t. You won’t.”
“You do not get on my nerves all the time. Sometimes you are mildly amusing.”
Liam carried the weight of worlds on his shoulders and was essential in maintaining the order of the universe. Without him, chaos would reign.
“Regardless of what happens or what you decide, I will stand by your side. I will fight this fight with you. You will not be alone, and I will do all I can to keep you safe.”
I didn’t feel like a monster with him, and I realized I never had.
She was my home.
“Remember that I love you.”
