Although there are many examples of queer artists throughout this book (Rosa Bonheur, Marie Laurencin, Hannah Höch, to name a few), here I want to spotlight artists working at the height of the European avant-garde who explicitly used their work to make bold statements about same-sex desire: declarations mostly suppressed or ignored in art history. It’s not that I believe their work should be viewed exclusively through a queer lens, for they were, of course, simply great artists.
