As Expressionism progressed in Germany in the early 1900s, artists also began capturing the intensity of a subject by distorting conventional colouring (which they believed to have spiritual, symbolic meanings), as well as looking to the natural world. These artists were often associated with the group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), formed in Munich in 1911, one of whose leading figures was Gabriele Münter (1877–1962).
