Makes me wonder if perhaps it was his father

It’s interesting that the phrase is never spoken in it’s entirety. Jack of all trades, master of none, but still better then master of one. Lol

That’s crazy, and they all seemed to except it so quickly. Hmm…

Hmm… apparently only void gave up his name.

Are we about to find out why Whitehall’s ward stones where damaged?

then he’ll give her something real to complain about, I reflected.  Boscha didn’t discriminate.  He was a petty little sadist to everyone.  Even his favourites couldn’t relax around him.  She’d be wiser to say nothing and soak up the lesson.
Jared McIntyre
It sounds as if magicians chafed under the empire and when it fell, they didn’t have any restrictions on their behavior. No wonder in Emily’s time magicians are considering honorary nobility.

The wards wouldn’t notice anything else.  We’d done it often enough, as students, to be sure we’d remain undetected until it was far too late.
Jared McIntyre
This must be how Void was able to sneak into Whitehall during Emily’s first year.

The charms we’d woven into the coin were subtle, designed to avoid detection, but once they took root
Jared McIntyre
I wonder if a similar charm was used on Emily’s ring.

Void had hexed them, the spell so low-power it was barely noticeable.  He’d always been the best of us when it came to casting such spells.
Jared McIntyre
That’s definitely an impressive display of control

“It’s too dangerous to leave him alive,” Void argued.  “If they discover the charms on him …”
Jared McIntyre
Wow Void is blood thirsty. Even before the accident he was so casually willing to kill.

“We have to enter the rite with the best of intentions.”
Jared McIntyre
If that’s true, Void may have been the problem. This was his idea after all.

There’d never been anything else like us.  And yet, somehow, the DemonMasters had figured out how to summon demons and bind them.  How?
Jared McIntyre
I imagine the demons allowed it.

The magic spiked.  Professor Bodoh’s body collapsed into a pile of dust, his magic drained in an instant.  I felt my mind stagger as more power, uncontrolled power, rushed into the spellwork and …

It was a hellish sound, ringing in our ears and tearing into our minds.  It had known all along the ritual would fail … of course it had known!  Our awareness was still expanding
Jared McIntyre
I just remembered grandmaster Gordian had told Emily there was a group of magicians who performed a ritual that got out of control. I wonder if this was what he was talking about. Hmm…

Hasdrubal, Late of House Barca.
Jared McIntyre
There doesn’t seem to be any indication that Emily ever got this letter. And there’s no indication of the dangers he spoke of. Unless it was of Void’s plot. Which now that I think about it. May well be what he was trying to warn her about.

do intend to write one more story set in this period, the story of how Hasdrubal defeated Grandmaster Boscha and took control of Whitehall (as you can tell, the school changed a lot between this story and Emily’s arrival), but that story will come later (probably in one of the Fantastic Schools collections).
Jared McIntyre
That’s going to be good!! Lol

Emily, who turned a blind eye to their budding romance, was grossly irresponsible.
Jared McIntyre
Makes sense from Emily’s point of view. The modern world of earth is mostly a self determination sorta world.

When you read the books as a child, watching Hagrid give Dudley a pig’s tale is hilarious; when you read them as an adult, you see Hagrid as (at best) a child abuser, convincing his parents that their fear and hatred of the wizards who have forced themselves into their lives is amply justified.
Jared McIntyre
I’ve never thought of it that way. But yes that does make sense. I can see how that would look to Dudley’s parents.

The majority of the barony’s aristocrats and their families were either dead, for choosing the wrong side, or nothing more than wards of the king until they reached their majority and tried to reclaim their lands.

All that explains why she had such an easy time of it.

Of course not. Lol they have no incentive to.

Emily had no idea why King Randor had picked him as her escort.  Surely, he had to realise Sir Blackley wasn’t the type of person to appeal to her.
Jared McIntyre
I doubt it. The king sees everything from his point of view. Even after wedding hells when he learned the truth he didn’t understand why someone would give up a barony.

Precisely, once it’s in their interest to maintain the roads they’ll do it.
