“Good morning, fratello.” Yes. Corso is definitely perky. And I don't know what a fratello is. Hopefully it isn't awful. “Morning. You feeling okay?”
Alex hums again. “Looks like you’ve thought of something. I hope it’s groveling. I hope you need Devon to beg you to forgive him before you’ll accept him.”
“He made you leave Jasper. And he didn’t fight for you. And he left you alone.”
“He was supposed to fight for you. I love Devon, but he has a hard time pulling his head out of his ass. The second we knew you were Jasper’s, you were ours, too. And he didn’t fight for you. I couldn’t do much, and I’m ashamed of that, but I at least questioned him. Kaleb did, too. Trent has been angry for months. Devon was the lead alpha in our pack, when he decides something, it’s hard to make him change his mind. Especially if he thinks he’s doing the right thing. It’s just bullshit that it took almost losing you for him to finally understand what he was doing to you, and to us.”
She doesn't reach for me and I fucking need her to. I need her forgiveness. I need it.
Corso and I have come to a silent agreement that she is ours before anyone else's. That isn't quite right, but it's the best explanation for the way we are with her.
“No, Jonas, you really can't. Don't speak to my omega again. Don't look at her. Don't say her fucking name. Go back to your table and sit the fuck down.”
“My father would have already killed you where you stand. The only reason I haven't is because I don't need another mess to clean up because of you. Your time will come soon enough.”
Awkward or not, marked or not, Devon is my alpha. Alphas protect their omegas. Alphas help their omegas find calm in the middle of the worst situations.
Devon is my alpha, and he will help me.
I know I don't deserve it, but I swear you can lean on me. I'll never be able to make up for what I've put you through, but I can do everything I can to prove myself to you from now on. I promise I can be a good alpha for you.”
Devon is a good alpha. He was terrible to me because he was afraid for Jasper and his pack. He was afraid for himself, too; and I won't fault him for any of those things. I'm not even upset with him for any of it.
“We're such assholes. She was taking care of us the whole time and we were assholes. And she's just letting us off the hook like it's no big deal.”
Then we make a very calm and collected mad dash to Nathan's room so we can watch the security feed.
“Run, Devon.”
Alex appears out of nowhere and grins at me. “Run, rabbit, run.”
The sweet scent of their arousal hits my senses like a truck, and my poor, confused dick finally gets the message that we're happy to have been caught.
They're really taking on my internal hang-ups one after another tonight, aren't they?
“She feels like rough water, when the river is choppy and too high after a storm. Water that's angry on the surface but so calm once you go under. She's sharp and sour and loves all of us so much it probably hurts sometimes. Even me. And especially you. She's perfect. Perfect for you, perfect for us.
She shakes her head. “You know what we need. Not them, Devon. Not them. We are yours. Just yours. Do better. Be with us. Really with us, not in the background working toward a future that you're outside of. You are ours. Make them understand that.”
Corso just says things like that, just drops huge epiphanies on you, then goes off to deliver snacks.
You're really going to like Nathan. He feels like being a little wine-drunk on a warm day and he smells like trees.” That is by far the best description of Nathan that I've ever heard.
“Let. Let me. You're not letting me do anything. I'm going to stand with my pack to protect our pregnant omega. My very pregnant mate. You'll lose this argument. The most I'll concede is being the last line of defense beside Corso. Talia will stay in Nathan's room and tell us every single thing she sees on the monitors. And she will not step a single toe across the threshold until one of us tells her it's safe to do it. Do you understand? If I have to make you do what I say I will. Even if you hate me for it, I will force you to let us keep you safe.”
Pride blooms through Talia's bond and it's apparent in her voice, “Jasper hung some prick across the banister by their guts. That was hot. We are winning.”
“If he steps into my home I will kill him. Understand that,” Jasper says with zero emotion.
“That sound makes my skin crawl. He's never made that sound before you became pregnant. I don't want to say it's the cause, but it's definitely correlated. What does it feel like? Is it like an alpha command?”
“Good. Talia, honey, you're going to be just fine. You're the strongest person I've ever known in my life and I'm so proud of you. Your baby is the luckiest baby in the entire world because you're going to be his mother. Your pack is there with you, and they'll help you. Jasper, sweetheart, are you doing alright?”
“She's so...tiny. And mad. You haven't known me long enough to be mad at me, little baby.”
