Then talk with your team or subleads. Tell them what’s happening, leading with the why. Give them time to talk about their own reactions to the news. Respect that they might be mad at you, the project lead, as the bearer of the bad news or the person who didn’t manage to “save” the project. It’s important that they hear it directly from you or another leader: don’t let them find out from the gossip mill, a mass email, or the company all-hands meeting.
