“What are you doing here?! I didn’t know you were in the city!” I shriek as I give him a quick hug. “I wasn’t. But you texted us to be here today, so here I am.” He smirks as he walks back to his seat.
You see, sometimes you look back at your first crush and think, “What the hell was I thinking?” But this is not the case with Evan. He is kind, funny and devastatingly handsome. He’s 6’4, annoyingly fit and knows how to dress well.
“Amelia, I don’t care if you’re the type of girl who is into grand gestures or not, but that engagement story … yeah that’s not the story you want to tell your kids about, it’s not the once in a lifetime experience that you deserve.”
“I’m using your shower and sleeping in your bed! Might even masturbate while I’m at it. And I’m locking the door so don’t get any ideas!” She slams the door, and I’m left questioning all of my life decisions up to this point.
The confession that kept me up most of the night. Amelia Nuñez has a crush on me. Had. First crush means she was just a kid, but what about now? To think that the woman who I’ve had embedded in my heart for the better part of a decade, at one time had feelings for me.
“Kicking people out of their own beds…not letting them into family gatherings? Tsk tsk.” He gently pushes past me and into the entryway, then leans down and whispers into my ear, “Remind me to teach you some manners later tonight.”
“Amelia, you’re standing in a twenty five million dollar home, with millions more in upgrades and renovations, and you’re concerned about my toilet paper budget. Adorable.”
“I thought you said you didn’t want a margarita, babe.” “I don’t, just needed a sip of yours, babe.” She snickers.
“Miami. When I came to visit you after you had broken up with your high school sweetheart. I wasn’t there because I was on a business trip. I flew down because I knew it was your birthday, and I wanted to celebrate with you. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was about to have the best night of my life with the girl who's always had my heart.”
“Amelia, we’ve already fought about this before. You deserve better than fine. You deserve the very best, and I’m going to give it to you. Just you wait and see.”
Oh my God did I actually ask if he was going to kiss me? “Yes, you did,” Evan says from behind me. “Wait, did I just say that out loud?” I cringe. “Yeah, you did. And I can see your mind going a mile a minute. Please feel free to share the rest of that inner monologue, I’m dying to see how that brain of yours works,” he taunts.
“Amelia.” Evan lifts my chin with his index finger and thumb slowly, until our lips are almost touching. “I need you to stop talking so I can kiss you senseless.”
“Amelia, I need you to shut up so I can fuck you now,” he says brushing his lips lightly like feathers against mine. “Oh. Wow. Ok, proceed,” I relent. Evan smiles as he kisses me. “My Amelia.”
He saunters into the kitchen still wet from his shower, with his towel riding low around his waist. “Come here often?” He winks. “Five times last night, but who’s counting.”
“Here you go,” he says as he hands me a bag of frozen peas. “Why are you giving me peas at nine AM?” I lift a quizzical brow. “It’s not for you, it’s for her.” His eyes drop to my nether regions with a grin. “Ice my baby up. You have the morning to recover before I go full caveman again. See you in a few hours.”
OH FUCK ME. Sebastián turns beet red. There’s no way for Evan to know about that birthmark if he hasn’t seen me naked, and Sebastián gets the message loud and clear.
“Closure?” I laugh. The nerve of this man. “I don’t think a man who imploded his engagement by being balls deep in another woman has the right to request closure,” I say that last word with air quotes. “She’s got a point there,” Evan mutters.
“Sebastián, Christine. It has not been a pleasure. You’re actually absolute shit people, and I hope to never make your acquaintance again. Especially you.” He nods to Sebastián.
“I remember your mom loved yellow tulips. She always found a sneaky way to integrate them into the typical holiday decor, and all the Tías would be up in arms because apparently it clashed with the tablescape. But I always loved how she stuck to her guns and had them at every family function.”
“I love you, Evan Cooper.” I smile softly. I hear an audible release of air from Evan’s chest as his shoulders slump. A few moments pass in silence. “Say it again.” He squeezes my hands with his eyes closed, causing me to smile like a fool.
I’ve lived the last decade of my life knowing what it is like to love Amelia, but now I have to live alone in a world where I know she loved me back.
Did I really think life was going to throw me a bone in the same year that my mom died, and my fiancé cheated on me? Yeah, no. That’s what I get for watching all those stupid rom coms.
“Evan, last night you told me there’s a psychopathic drug lord trying to keep us apart. I’ve got bigger fish to fry than worrying about my older brother’s reaction to me dating his best friend. Call back now. Let him up. Put on a shirt.”
Last year, taking this ring off my mother’s finger, marked the saddest day of my life. One year later, Evan slipping the same ring onto my finger, marks it as the happiest day of my life.
“But there was never a doubt that it would be me and you. We were always destined to belong together, Amelia. I may have been your first crush, but you were always my forever.”
I lean back to look at him, and a cheeky grin spreads across my face. “You know what this means right? Evan cocks his head. “Um, we’re going to be parents?” He chuckles. I giggle before I say, “After all this time, we’re finally gonna get to play that daddy game Mr. Cooper.”
