“The start of your villain era,” she said. “The ‘no fucks given, ask me if I care, throw out your whole life and start over just because you feel like it’ era.”
“I have a reasonable amount of depression,”
“No, no. I’m fine walking. I’ll find my way. Just point me in the right direction.”
“You’re not wandering through an orchard after sunset. That’s not an option.” I called up the stairs, “Gen, get down here. We need to drive your friend down the hill.”
The fuck you will.
“Can I drive?” she asked. “No,” I shouted. To Shay, I added, “I don’t let her drive. I let her steer once and now she thinks she’s training for Formula One.”
Shay gave me a glance that repeated her assertion of not needing an escort back to her car. And that was tough shit.
“I always told Lollie this would be the perfect spot for weddings. Can’t you see a little arbor here and seats there? The photos would be amazing.” I took a sip of water. “You know what would be even better? A space for wedding receptions too. And gardens. More gardens. Three seasons of gardens.
okay either this is just her reminiing on weddings or she and noah are getting married here. Or she runs a wedding venue here. I think option 2 tho is most likely.
He shifted, hooking his thumb in my belt loop and sliding his hand into my pocket. He splayed his fingers over my belly roll and thigh crease. The only things between us were the thin lining of my pocket and some bikini briefs, and everyone for twenty feet around had to be aware of that.
but he was drawing circles on my belly roll while not so politely telling this woman he wanted none of what she was offering. If this wasn’t the outer banks of possessive, I didn’t know what was.
Bite my neck, honey. Just do it. Don’t make me wait.
“Have you decided what you want to eat?” he asked, low, grumbly, perfect. I didn’t know when the grumbly had transformed from mildly amusing to fully arousing but I was here now and not interested in leaving. “Hmm? I want to get you fed, sweetheart.”
Who the fuck is Jaime?
All right. We’ll keep Jaime.
“I’m not sure. Is there something you’d share with me?” Only everything in the entire world.
“There is no way I’m letting you—no. Put your money away.”
“Not when you’re with me.”
Bonus points if you suck it off my thumb.” Suck it off my thumb.
“We’ll drop you at your car.” “It’s fine. I can—” “We’ll drop you at your car and then we’re following you to Twin Tulip. No argument.”
“I’m parked just down there. I don’t need a ride.” “Get in the truck.”
Daddy Bread Baker.”
fuck it. That was it. Fuck it. A long-term gig wasn’t the plan and it changed everything I’d mentally prepared for but fuck it. Fuck the plan. Fuck the mental preparation. Fuck everything because believing I had any control over my life was an exercise in comedy.
“You too. Wander away from me and there will be consequences.”
“Just wait until Daddy Bread Baker gives you his baguette.”
“Why is it,” he started, gesturing with his folder, “like this? Why hasn’t the furniture been set up?” “I haven’t done it yet.” “Why are you doing it?”
Noah brought his hand to my back, steering me away from the curb.
Noah insisted on paying the license fee.

consider your fields plowed and planted.”
“I’ve already agreed to work your fields,”
“You said you had to do something decent for Shay to make up for running into her house like an ape and not minding your goddamn manners this morning.” She adjusted her eye patch to dangle from her neck. “You said you’d have to bring her a big fucking fruit basket. You said fucking. I didn’t say fucking. It was you. But I think a big fucking fruit basket is dumb. No one wants a basket of fruit.”
Noah: Cancel the car. I’ll be there in 20 minutes.
Shay: You don’t have to come get me.
