Gennie took that moment to stab her sword at the ground and announce, “I’m bored as a motherfucker.”
Shay had always had one of those faces meant for smiling. Not every face was meant for smiling but Shay’s was one of them. The corners of her lips were always tipped up as if she was waiting for a reason to smile.
His skin was tanned and freckled from his time outdoors, and confidence blared from the sharp cut of his scruffy jaw and those broad shoulders. This was no self-conscious kid. He was in control and he knew it.
“You said she was the one who got away,” Wheatie continued. “You said she’d always be the one.”
“It’s good to have you back.”
Five more minutes of pretending she was mine.
I brushed my lips over Shay’s temple once more. Not because Christiane was watching or because I gave a shit about anyone’s opinion. I did it because I’d wanted to do this since long before I knew what it was to kiss a woman on the forehead instead of the mouth.
“I’m not sure. Is there something you’d share with me?” Only everything in the entire world.
“Yeah, so, he’s in love with you.” “He adores everything about you,”
“Believe me. I know. I’ve tried to forget you. I couldn’t. Nothing I did chased those memories away.”
“Allow me to make myself clear. I don’t give a pickled fuck how or why we came to be married. You are my wife. If you need some fun, you’ll call me. I’ll be the one taking care of you. I’ll give you anything you want, including a properly prepared gin and tonic. If you can’t accept that, you’re welcome to divorce me now.”
“Is that Lollie’s special occasion menu?” “As much of it as I could remember,”
This one looked like dry, chocolatey paste. There were three others, each in various states of preparation though it was clear all of them were attempts at homemade frosting.
“Made for you,”
“You can sleep on me all night,” I said. Every night. Always. Forever.
Hell, I’d kiss her elbow if that was what she gave me. I loved every inch of this impossible woman.
it wasn’t until I could hear over my heartbeat again that I realized I’d been whispering mine into her skin the whole time.
If only she knew how much I’d always liked her. That there was no one else for me. My world started and ended with her sitting beside me on those dark morning rides to school, and it started up all over again when I found her on my farm.
I couldn’t tell her that I loved her. Loved her so completely, so thoroughly, that no one else in the world could compare.
“This is where you belong, Shay. This is the home and we are the family you’ve always wanted.”
“Let her go before I rip your fucking arm off.”
I wouldn’t feel as though I’d gone to Rhode Island searching for the remnants of home and I’d found precisely that.
“I love you. I mean, I fucking love you, Shay. I’ve loved you for years upon fucking years and none of the garbage leftover from your ex or your mother or anyone else is going to change that. You will not change that.”
Someday, I want to see you smile. Like, a real smile.
My once and future rescuer, In case no one has ever told you this, you have the best heart in the whole world. Even when you’re grouchy as fuck (see: the past two weeks straight),
For real, BG, you’re my best friend. Never lose that sweet heart. Someday, I’ll rescue you.
“There was no blue-gray without the wonky stars. They only ever existed together.”
Her earrings were in the shape of pickles and they were completely ridiculous. I loved everything about them.
