“My name,” Loren said, taking another step back for good measure. “Is Loren Parker.” Her cigarette fell from her hand and bounced against the concrete, scattering a few sparks at the contact and rendering her almost invisible again. “No,” Iza said, and nothing more. She sounded almost as terrified as he felt, and it took him a moment to pull himself together.
“There is something wrong with me.” Iza insisted. “I can’t be around you.” “I know,” Loren said. “If you’re here to kill me,” Iza said, keeping her eyes locked on the counter. “It won’t work—I’ve already tried.”
“Do not say that to me,” Iza managed, “This doesn’t change what happened. I never should have done that to you.” “Do you—” Loren said, struggling with the words. “Do you regret it?” “Of course I do,” Iza said, shaking. “Every moment of every day.”
