“You are the baby,” he reminded her. “I’m the youngest. There’s a difference. I’m still an adult.
No, Eva didn’t need another protector. She needed a man who would forget to be careful with her. One who made her feel lusted after, loved, craved, adored.
“What are you doing tonight?” “Huh?” Great, response Eva. You’re a real sweaty intellectual. “Have dinner with me?” “You want to have dinner?” “Did you hit your head again this morning?” he teased.
“Hang on a second. I just want to make it crystal clear that this is a date,” he told her, his thumb tracing the edge of her jaw. They were so close in the confined space, he swore he could hear the beat of her heart. “You seemed a little confused last night and this morning. So just so there’s no misunderstandings…”
“This has nothing to do with any kind of planetary alignment. I’ve wanted you from the first second I laid eyes on you.”
“I think you’re probably going to need to clarify that apology. Lying. Ducking out on me last night. Ignoring my calls. What do you think that does to a guy who thinks he’s in love with you?”
“You can’t love me, yet,” she told him. “Not without knowing me.” “Then let me get to know you.” “I guess we could give it a shot.”
“You guys about done in there?” Beckett called. “Who gave that guy a bullhorn?” Donovan murmured against Eva’s mouth. She laughed. “I really like you, Sheriff.” “I really like you, too, Eva.”
“The mess is more important than the big wins,” Gia nodded. “That’s like if I wouldn’t have introduced you guys to my kids before they were potty-trained and feeding themselves. Babies and toddlers are the mess, but you can’t skip over the mess and just land at the good stuff. Most of the good stuff is in the mess.”
Emma snatched one off the stack and flipped it open. “That’s What She Said Publishing?” Eva grinned. “That’s me, too.”
“I love you, and I love your dad,” Donovan said, shoving his face in the bag to sniff. “I know we’re taking things slow and all, but I’m going to marry you, and we’re going to serve baked ziti at our reception.” “I think Uranus is getting to you, too.” Donovan yawned mightily. “I don’t care what Uranus does to me as long as you’re with me. As soon as I get this situation cleaned up, we should have a date. You can watch me eat the dinner you brought me.”
“Just because you’re not where you want to be yet doesn’t mean you aren’t who you need to be,”
“Are you kidding me? We’re about to join a secret society!
“Girl, what the hell?” Bobby broke first. “You knew the rules. Why didn’t you just tell us about Mason and let us do our thing?”
This is why I’m not a fan of the Beautification Committee. As unpopular an opinion as that is, why should anyone be required to get the BCs permission to fall in love? Pretty sure Franklin and Phoebe did it without the BCs help.
“Wait! There’s something you need to know!” Donovan’s hands dug into her hips. “Baby. I’m going to literally die in the next four seconds if I’m not inside you.” “You’re my next hero.” Her words came out in a breathy whisper.
“I wrote you. You’re in my book.” “I can live with that. We good?”
“I feel you, baby. Let go.” Please, for the love of God. He needed her to let go so he could follow her into the abyss.
They came together, one release milking the other. As he emptied himself into her, Donovan vowed that this would be his last first time. “I love you, Evangelina.” The words escaped him on waves of ecstasy. “I’m starting to believe you,” she whispered back, pressing her lips to his throat.
Where she’d spent her entire life trying to prove herself worthy of love, he’d simply loved. More than that, he trusted his heart without questioning whether or not it was right. And just like that, the broken pieces of a little girl’s heart knit together a little tighter.
You took some lumps when you were younger and had to work for your confidence, your independence. Don’t discount that work. You’ve earned every inch of where you are today.”
“Sometimes fast doesn’t mean wrong,” Franklin said with a wink. “Not when happiness is on the line.”
“Hey, we didn’t get to that part yet,” Beckett said, prodding Donovan in his shoulder. “I guess I got carried away.”
