I believed in the power of smiles and laughter, even when life didn’t give me reasons for either of them. I tried anyway.
Sometimes I’d go weeks, even months, without seeing her and still felt like I knew her to her bones, like we could pick up exactly where we left off. Any time Leo mentioned his sister, I absorbed the information like a sponge, needing any sign that she was okay, happy. It didn’t help that I knew what she tasted like, how incredible her body felt beneath my hands. Which was why I was in this mess in the first place.
“You spent the whole game on your phone and missed the end to answer a call you could’ve sent to voicemail, and you don’t think you’re a workaholic? Didn’t picture you for stupid.”
Dorothy was right. There’s no place like home. Sometimes.
Despite his persistent moodiness, he always seemed to have a calming effect on me. On tougher days all I wanted to do was run straight to Rafe and sink into his solid arms. Everything felt like it was going to be okay when I was near him.
“Yeah, maybe I am. So what? Why is needing alone time selfish?
What was so wrong with needing space?
“I think life would be pretty boring if we all ran at the same pace, don’t you think?”
She’d intoxicate even the sternest of men. Even me.
“I dress for me.” Talia rocked her hips, trying to force my fingers lower. “Anything else is a bonus.”

Talia was the love of my life, and that put her on a whole other level to everyone else, but she was also my friend.
She was the sun and they were all sunflowers reaching out in her direction. I was the tallest of them all.
