My brain started up like a 1990s computer, slowly rebooting.
For all I knew, there could be a cannibal cult running around, drinking blood.
But I had Biology labs at four. So, I’d needed to reschedule my mental collapse until after finals.
the closest thing I could find were online forums where people pretended to be vampires. Cool but not what I was looking for.
I hadn’t seen the guy aka the Maybe Vampire Psychopath
“Misunderstanding? You attacked me!” “You’re right. I’m sorry.
On a scale of one to dumb, I was the dumbest
How was it that, the one time I tried to do something normal, vampires had to be there?
“They took my stuff! What the heck? What kind of vampire steals women’s purses?!
But I was determined, drunk or not. Nothing was going to hurt her with me around.
I definitely didn’t want to think of how warm she felt or the feeling of her breath on my neck. No. The brick was a really nice shade of red, and the rain made the color pop away from the mortar.
“How did I end up in some angsty teenage novel?” She looked up at me through wet eyelashes. “This is not what I wanted to do today.”
“Calem. That’s my real last name. Aaron Calem at your service. Let’s add that to our secrets list.”
“Look what I found. Isn’t it great?!” “It’s . . . a giant gummy bear.” “Awe, you’re not as excited as I’d hoped.
“Okay, I get that, but I don’t need you to do that. I can pay for them.” Aaron smiled again. “Then, I’m sorry.” I raised a brow. “Sorry?” “For this!” In one fluid motion he swiped the card from my hand and chucked it as far as it would go.
“She likes peonies, by the way.” I tried my best to force a wide, toothy smile. “Don’t worry. You’ll get it next time.”
William chuckled, the whites of his teeth taunting. “Noted. Thanks for keeping my date company.
A few streams of the alcohol trickled down my neck and lurched forward, and I pretended to fall into a coughing fit. The liquid sprayed all over her dress.
“You’re not ready yet. But you will be soon, and when the time is right . . . you won’t be able to save her.”
I hated that hunting people was so easy. It was easy to hide the sound of my footsteps. Easy to move out of the way when they looked behind them. It was too easy.
He relentlessly pursued me and my happiness.
“No matter what happens . . . if we have to leave, I promise that I’ll come back for you. I would never leave you here alone, and I won’t just leave without telling you. So, if I disappear because something happens to me, I just need you to know how important you are and that I wouldn’t abandon you.”
“Please don’t start talking about some little creepy girl following you or something.”
From my years of watching crime movies, I knew I was walking into a trap. “Come alone” always means there’s someone waiting to kill or torture you.
