When you start to think about all the work involved, it can be difficult to even begin. That’s called analysis paralysis.
The true challenge is being satisfied with the moment while simultaneously working towards growth. To try to rush is to live in a future that never becomes the present, with success always just out of reach.
Isaac Asimov, the Golden Age science fiction author, said it best: “The true delight is in the finding out rather than the knowing.”
As the celebrated author Ray Bradbury said, you must “Jump off cliffs and build your wings on the way down.”
And boredom is the antithesis of creativity.
If we can never reach perfection, at some point in the process we must come to terms with the truth—that the actual creation in front of us will never be exactly like the idea in our mind—and make the active decision to say, “This will do.”
The first and most important element of discipline is the decision to commit to your goals, to make sacrifices today that will pay off tomorrow. It isn’t easy—if it were, everyone would do it—but it does work. If there’s a secret to success, it’s not in what people do—the actual act isn’t a secret—but that they do it at all.
Learning has no limits. Don’t be content to master one skill and neglect others. Without diversification, your strengths can turn into weaknesses. Commit to being a student for life.
