They’ve been in his dungeons this entire time. But there’s more. Tessa’s surname is Baran. You know what that means and who her father was. I don’t know what she’s trying to accomplish, but I worry it’s nothing good. It seems she’s fooled us all.
“Oh, there are many things I would have you call me. Unfortunately, fate has decided otherwise.”
“Second, if you see a comet in the sky, burning a bright white, it means a god is returning. You need to kill whoever caused that to happen. If you don’t, you will never be able to save this world. That person must die, Kalen. Do you understand me?”
The only way to escape what I’d promised would be my death.
The mists were coming. Did that mean he was, too?
softly.
Tessa faced them right along with me. And she did not turn away.”
But I had to find a way. Because I would not let King Oberon bind her to him. If I had to rip that entire chasm apart to get to her, I would.
“Twenty years ago.” Nellie frowned. “You were five. I was three. That was when he first tried to cut it out of you. It was going to be me, because I was younger, but you insisted he choose you
instead. You’ve always protected me. Always. And I’ll always protect you, too.”
For her, I could do this. For her, I would do anything.
“I thought you were dead,” he ground out, shuddering. “We went to the castle. The dungeons were empty. There was blood on the floor and fire everywhere. I thought you were dead.” His voice cracked on the last word. Something in my heart cracked right along with it.
He was here. And I was here. It seemed to defy the fidelity of this world. Somehow, despite everything, we had both made it back to each other. Alive.
He stopped just ahead of me and then turned. Before I knew what was happening, he had me trapped against the stone wall with his warm breath tickling my neck. He leaned in and whispered into my ear, “I can’t hate anything when it’s coming from your lips.”
“Good,” he said in a growl as his lips skimmed my neck. “I hope he does. And he will see that his claim on you means nothing. You are not his, and you never will be. Fuck his dragon mark.”
“I will never let him touch you again. Do you understand me?” “It might not be up to you,” I whispered back. “He would have to rip my limbs from my body to stop me from protecting you. And even then, I would find a way.”
“Nothing could be painful enough to stop me from saving you.”
“Books are the boards beneath our feet. Without them, we risk wading in mud.”
“You have consumed me. Everything about you drives me mad, and yet I would not change a thing. I want
to give you the greatest pleasure you will ever know, fill you with so much rapture that you forget your own name.”
“I’m not religious, love, but I am going to worship your body, starting with the altar of your thighs.”
“You know, you are a very tense and angry person.”
