“If those shadowfiends aren’t dead yet, they will be soon. He’ll kill them all to get to me.”
“I thought you were dead,” he ground out, shuddering. “We went to the castle. The dungeons were empty. There was blood on the floor and fire everywhere. I thought you were dead.” His voice cracked on the last word. Something in my heart cracked right along with it.
“Nevermind that anymore. You can call me whatever the fuck you want. I’m just glad you’re alive.”
“I can’t hate anything when it’s coming from your lips.”
“I will never let him touch you again. Do you understand me?” “It might not be up to you,” I whispered back. “He would have to rip my limbs from my body to stop me from protecting you. And even then, I would find a way.”
I would carry Tessa to the moon and back, if I must. Halfway to Endir, she squirmed in my arms and cracked open her eyes. She reached up and touched my face. “Is this a dream? Are you really here?” Relief shook my weary body. “I’m here, love.” She smiled and closed her eyes, sagging against me once more.
