I’m still me. Dahlia Brady, shy and awkward, destined to never have a boyfriend.
And it isn’t that I hate who I am or anything. I am a great friend.
It’s just that being shy and awkward makes it hard to do things like date, or even talk to guys. I like my life, but I’d also like to make out with a hot boy (or many hot boys) on the regular.
“Hey, asshole. That’s my girlfriend you’re making a pass at, and trust me, you’d be so lucky.”
“Wow.” Felix’s voice freezes my movements from head to toe. He steps through the crowd, eyes locked on me. “Dahlia, you look…wow.” He clears his throat. “I’ve forgotten all other adjectives.”
“Did he really take on three guys?” Jane asks.
“Walters mentioned it. He’s all, my girlfriend is so hot, and my girlfriend is the best at flip cup, and my girlfriend is a kick-ass golfer.” As he speaks, Brogan brings a hand to his chest and mimics Felix but in a high-pitched voice.
“Shut the fuck up.” Felix tries to laugh it off, but his face is a little red. He glances at me and winks. “All true, though.”
“Relax, hot stuff.” Felix drops a hand to my thigh under the table, and I do the exact opposite of relax. “All good things.”
Happy-looking people get less attention.
“Eddie is a little bigger than you,” she says. “Way to ruin the moment,” I mutter under my breath. That killed any movement south. “I mean taller. What are you, six-two?” “And a half.” That half inch seems super important right now.
I realized tonight I don’t know a lot about you, outside of football and parties.” “That’s all there is to know,” he says, but I notice his jaw tics.
“Are you two gonna keep playing or make out?” Lucas asks. Without tearing his gaze from mine, Felix says, “Make out.” My pulse races and my heart is hammering in my chest. “To be clear,” he says as he brings his mouth closer. “This isn’t part of the Felix Walter’s experience.” “No?” “Uh-uh. This is the Dahlia Brady effect. Totally different thing. You drive me completely fucking crazy.”
I know Steven pretty well from hanging out with Jordan. He’s all right, I guess. I might have even liked him once, before he put his hands on Dahlia. Now he’s just some guy in my fucking way.
“Oh my god. That’s it.” His eyes widen and his face lights up. “You’re that girl from that show…Ivy. Ivy Greene. God, I loved that show. What was it called? You were so good. You still sing then?”
“Oh, for the love of God!” Bethany screeches. I’m ready to lay into her, but Dahlia steps in front of me. “Do you mind? I’m trying to have a moment here.”
