Magic flows through it like a hidden web. It connects all things and weaves them together.
Above all, magic will try its best to preserve itself by protecting its world. It has and will always choose to protect itself. To go against this is a great evil indeed.”
“Gods, magic… Who’s to say they’re not the same thing?”
What we encountered was no doubt dark magic, which means someone must be wielding it against us. But why?
“She has forbidden me from saving them. The darkness will spread until all the Kingdoms fall. Her power is growing…She is almost ready.” I don’t even know what I am saying anymore.
“She has made it so that we may never touch one another. The Lady…she will not let me. I cannot save them. I cannot move.”
“Because I cannot be with him.”
pray to the Guard that he would cause Verdana to collapse into the sea! I swear he provides no refuge, no ships, no escape for any of your people! May they drown in your iniquity! And may he block entry into the afterlife to anyone from the North! The Great Lands will not see one Verdanian, by the Guard!”
“I will not kill you for your sins, King Ivar of Verdana, and King Vaskis of Baelliles. But because of your blasphemy, I will curse your lands. I will ensure that your Kingdoms will not receive the peace you sought after!”
curse your children, the blood of your blood, the heirs to your thrones. I curse their love, and I take no pity on them!”
“Should Idalia Hyland and Braizen Brader ever touch, they will die, and their Kingdoms will fall with them.”
my body’s call to let the fire loosen the invisible chains is stronger. I break free and barrel towards Braizen as fast as my leaden legs will carry me.
Should they ever touch, you will all die with them.”
“They were looking within, gauging the outcomes of what you’d see,”
“Those women are the Mineas of the Herrah. The ones who founded Idizina hundreds of years ago
Her laugh spills from her like liquid. If only I had a cup, I’d gladly scoop it up and merrily drink it.
I follow this familiar feeling, hoping it will lead me to her again.
So, he sat her next to me in the carriage, where she’d be safe.”
“He took her to a place called Pathstowe. He used to take me to visit her until I was old enough to go alone.
as if I’m supposed to be here. As if I belong.
How do I explain an unknown force that urges me to do things, appeared just as his friends were about to die? And that I must do as it demands, or I become drenched in insufferable discomfort that only grows with denial?
“The Herrah siphon the forest's magic to do good, to protect it. The ones who wield magic in this way are the Holders of Light. But, as I told you before, there are those who seek to disturb the network. They’re called The Others or the Keepers of the Dark…”
“They’re the followers of The Dreaded,”
“The same reason your father wants her. Power. Why do you think he sent you to collect her? Baellileans have always been a greedy sort and it seems you are no stranger to the characteristic yourself.”
“All I know for sure is that Idalia Hyland is caught up in both. She holds the key.”
My own palms burst with heat as I watch the dark smoke wrap itself around the horse and see its body rise a few inches.
Just as a prophet can see into the future, a Minea can see into the past.
A Minea cannot send anyone back but themselves.”
when more than one Minea harnesses the energy together.”
“But if Mineas can only send themselves back, that would make me…” I pause and hold up one finger as if to stop my thought. She chuckles under her breath. “A Minea? Yes, I suppose it does.”
You are a descendant of a Hyland, which means you wield magic, more so than you know.
“They came down when their names were sworn in anger. But do they come when their names are invoked for mercy? For health? For food?”
“The Others seek to snuff out all light, and they know that yours burns too brightly.”
