“Make a wish.” “Wishes lead to disappointment.” “Wishes are hope with wings,” I counter. “Make one.”

“Snowflake,” I call when she reaches the mouth of her driveway. She looks over her shoulder. “If I text you, will you text back?” “I guess there’s only one way to find out.”

“What the hell is an emotional boner?” “It’s a real thing. It’s how I feel every time I make you smile or laugh. Like my emotions are all excited and can’t be contained.”

“You’re turning into my favorite person real fast.”

“The environment is lacking in romance.” I point to the sky. “The stars are all starry, and the crickets are being cricket-y. How much more romantic does it need to be?”

“Okay. Deal. Fingerbang Friday is on like Donkey Kong.”

I understand why my mom cautions me against dreams, though. Because the only thing worse than not having them at all is getting close enough to touch them, only to have them snatched away.

Here I am telling you wishes are hope with wings, and you’re used to having yours clipped.”

“Fingerbang Friday is my favorite,” I mumble. “Just wait. Tongue-Fuck Tuesday is gonna blow your mind.”

Words leave invisible wounds, the kind that won’t heal no matter how much time passes. They fester and ooze and infect the heart. So anytime someone tries to get inside it, it infects them too.

“You don’t have to fight every fight with an army of one, Winter. Just remember that, okay?”

“Your heart has too many cracks already, Snowflake. Don’t go shattering it by carrying burdens you don’t deserve.”

“Oh no. You can’t say things like ‘Lavender and Kody use duct tape’ and expect me not to ask questions.
