he looks a lot like Randy Ballistic, the former NHL star. Who I’m about to meet. If I don’t faint first. “Hey, Dad, I wanted to introduce you to Winter. She works at Boones with Rose, and she’s a hockey player.” The conversation amongst the dads stops, and every head turns our way. It’s a moment that will 1000 percent go down in my top-five most memorable. Because I’m in the presence of some of the greatest retired players in the league.
Not the point.” I motion between us. “We’re destined to know each other. I like you. I think you’re fucking gorgeous. I want your digits so I can tell you that in awkward text messages.”
Winter doesn’t have it easy. And I’m over here with my retired-NHL-player dad, driving around in a flashy Jeep, never worrying about money. It seems like maybe she is.
“Make a wish.” “Wishes lead to disappointment.” “Wishes are hope with wings,” I counter. “Make one.”
His gaze moves over my face. “You don’t have to fight every fight with an army of one, Winter. Just remember that, okay?” “It’s all I’ve ever known.” “It doesn’t have to stay that way.”
I know it’s not okay, and you have every right to be upset, but if there’s a way I can fix this, tell me and I’ll do it. Whatever it takes.” He stops and turns to face me, running a hand through his hair. “I just… I really like you, and the thought of losing this, you… I’ve felt sick all day. And anxious. My stomach has been in knots, and my mouth has been dry, and I can’t eat, and you’re all I can think about.
I want to show you that whatever we’re not calling this, I’m in. All the way.”
