You possess your home so completely, it becomes so much a part of you, that it is hard to imagine that anybody else once felt the same about it.

And then you wonder who will take your place, and to whom your home will be passed on.

Just as I sometimes look at my hands and think about all the things I have done with them, and how one day they will be the cold white hands of a corpse, like the cadaveric hands I loved dissecting as a medical student.

But problems can arise when you become a senior surgeon yourself,

your work and decisions are much less likely to be observed.
