“Because I know you.” He brushed a piece of hair out of her face, and she swatted his hand away, making him smile. “I know you sleep with your mouth slightly open. Your favorite color is red, and you hate reading. I know how your eyes swell when you cry, breaking my heart into a million pieces.”
Something in her chest stuttered with heartache, like watching the third-act breakup of a romance movie. The only difference was she had missed the beginning of the movie and didn’t know what was happening. That’s what her life felt like.
“Who are you?” she asked, barely above a whisper. Reaching out a hand, he tenderly ran his thumb across her bottom lip. “I am a man who dreams of you, even if you don’t dream of me, and when you forget me and move on with your life, I will dream of you still.” He dropped his arm and backed away with a resigned expression.

Her last thought before sleep pulled her under was, “He’s real.”
“You’re real,” she claimed as she closed the distance between them. “Don’t deny it because I know I’m right.” Her teeth dug into her bottom lip, and he could tell she was staving off tears. Wrapping his hand around the back of her neck, he pulled her closer. Their lips were only a breath apart, and he couldn’t help but smile. “Am I?”
Caius longed to tell her that, no, he didn’t always think with his dick because his thoughts were consumed with all of her, not just her body. He missed everything about her. Their late-night talks in bed, her temper, her teasing, the way she’d bring him sweets or a book if he had trouble sleeping. He loved this woman more than he’d ever loved anything, and without her, he felt broken.
Love blinds your brain and binds your will, and once it takes hold, you become a slave to it.
Sitting back in shock, he scratched his jaw as he thought. Why would Gedeon cut the funding to the assistance programs? He didn’t need the money. On top of being the Lux King, each of the Royals had an inheritance from their parents. It was what Caius transferred to Rory in Erdikoa.
Sam licked the chocolate from the corner of his mouth. “I will help, but do not put all of your eggs into a picnic basket.” Caius barked out a laugh. The rapport around the palace had been dark since Rory left, and seeing his friend had not changed was nice. “It’s ‘in one basket,’” Caius told him. “Not a picnic basket.” Sam threw the chocolate wrapper into a trashcan as they approached the palace gates. “Does the size of the basket matter?”
“Open the front door,” Lauren said to Rory’s retreating back. She regarded the Angel as she rerouted to the foyer and opened the door. Lauren followed behind her and pointed outside. “Throw your attitude out, and then we’ll talk.”

Lauren placed both hands on Rory’s shoulders and pulled her down to eye level. “There isn’t enough magic in either of the realms to keep him from getting to you.”
“Do not underestimate the power of Caius’ love. He will break out of Vincula, and when he does, the entire realm will feel his wrath.”
“I am yours, Aurora Raven. Every part of me belongs to you. Another woman couldn’t hold my attention if they tried.”
“You already hold my heart in your hands, Aurora Raven. One day you’ll believe me, whether you remember me or not.”
He set the phone down, and the first tear fell. The number of times Caius cried in his life could be counted on one hand, but seeing her, living her life and happy, broke him. It was everything he wanted for her, and if she weren’t in danger, he would live his life in misery if it meant she stayed that way.
Screaming crying sobbing!
“I can’t believe I forgot you,” she mumbled into his shirt before drawing back. His mouth tugged to the side. “Do not be hard on yourself. I have a forgettable face.”
“I have waited for you my entire life,” he whispered. “I’ve been waiting for you too,” she murmured. “I just didn’t know it.”
