Fiona nodded with a small smile. She was a tough businesswoman, and her soul was a darker shade of grey, but there was good in her, too. She was far enough away from black that her soul didn’t suffocate Rory when they touched. “You stay safe, girl, and come see me at the market sometime.”
“Intercepted by whom?” “A maid,” Sam replied. Why did he sound uncomfortable? “I shifted into a cat, hoping to move around undetected, and she caught me and tried to take me home.” Lauren laughed loudly. Rory slapped her hand over her mouth to keep from doing the same.
“If I die, I’ll kill you.” He’d never smiled so big in his entire life.

Sam snorted. “You would punch your friend?” “Yes.” Her reply was automatic, and his laugh shook the walls. “But only for something important,” she amended.
No words came to her, only rapid breaths. It was the sexiest, sweetest, and stupidest thing she’d ever heard in her life.
