“I was wounded at Lucia River, so badly that I was supposed to die in the Meriah infirmary. I held on for days, but was too weak to be evacuated, and when Dacre came to take Meriah … he healed me before I died. He held me by the debt of my life, and I had no choice but to fight for him.”
Did he have a choice to fight after hearing Enva's music? Did it simply inspire him to enlist, or did it *compel* him?
Very interested in whether Forest had free will. It would decide how I feel about his desertion. Like, if he had no choice, then of course I don't fault him for leaving. If he did choose to go to war, then his going AWOL is running from a duty he signed up for against an enemy that needed to be stopped. WWI was a pointless tragedy, but the war here is supposed to be about stopping a cruel god.
