We must be mindful that the finest example of a zāhid is the Prophet . The Companions were unsettled when the Prophet told them that a person’s deeds cannot save him, that even the Prophet’s deeds could not save him! But then he reassured them of Allah’s mercy, and said, ‘Seek what is balanced and correct! Worship Allah in the morning and the evening and in a portion of the night. Be moderate! Be moderate and you will reach your destination.’ (Bukhārī 6463 and Muslim 2818).
