“Angel and I are close,”
“Feel like I’ve been waiting for Daze and Way my entire life. I’d go to the courthouse tonight if I could talk them into it.”
“I’m sayin’ I want to get as close to you as you’ll let me. The closer I get to you, the better I feel. Like right now,” I said softly. “I feel like I can finally breathe easy.”
“Angel, you already have.”
“I was. Now I’m just looking to get through the day.”
“I might not think about anything else,”
“Don’t go.” The easygoing humor vanished and those blue eyes pleaded with me to stay. “It feels better when you’re close.”
“Hear me out,” he said, tightening his hold on my hand. “I’m too tired to make a move on you.” “I’ve heard that one before,” I said dryly. “Fair. How about this? Whenever you’re close, everything is better. The closer you are, the easier I breathe, the less I feel like life is just a never-ending pour of lemon juice into an open wound that won’t heal. You take away the dark, the cold. And you remind me what it’s like to want to be here.”
“I’m so fucking tired, Angel. I just want to close my eyes next to you. Can we worry about the consequences after?”
“Don’t go. Please. I’ll give you something to sleep in. Just…don’t leave.”
“But right now, all I can think about is goin’ to sleep and waking up next to you.”
“Baby, it’s not a game to me. This is my life. You are the only thing in my entire existence that makes me feel like I’ve got a shot at finding my way back. I don’t understand it. And frankly I don’t need to. All I know is I feel better when I’m touching you. When I woke up this morning, I didn’t feel like a ghost or a shadow. I felt good.”
“I just wish I woulda kept trying to look to the light instead of sinking into the dark,” he said. “A man can learn to live in that dark, but it’s no life.”
You’re not responsible for how you were brought up, but you are responsible for your actions and reactions once you’re an adult.”
“Baby, we’re already in one whether you like it or not.”
“For taking a chance on me. For being with me now.
“Doesn’t feel good to have people shoving their noses in your business, does it?”
“Thought it would make for a smoother ride.”
“Lina, the only way you’re going to know if he’s the one is if you treat him like he’s the one. He can either earn the title or lose it.
“Stop seeing Sloane and the job is yours.”
“What’s missing?” she asked. “Our date. The happiest day of my life.”
