To anyone who needs the reminder that sometimes the most courageous act is knowing when to accept help.
“What’s the matter, Tulok?” I asked as I summoned a black tee into my hand. “Intimidated by my wingspan?”
Pale, tattooed skin transformed into black and gold glittering scales, the hum of power surging in my veins as it did every time I shifted.
“You weren’t complaining about my bedside manner last Halloween, if I recall correctly.”
My eyes snapped open again as I looked at her dead-on. “Then take off your pants and sit on my face.”
It brought my face right in front of hers, and I couldn’t help but inhale her sweet scent of vanilla and bergamot. She smelled amazing.
She held out the crutches, and I snatched them from her. “I don’t need you.” “Keep telling yourself that, Mushu.”
“Apparently,” Eva leaned forward into Zaph’s wings conspiratorially, “this is called a reverse harem. Ever heard of one, Selene?”
“Oh, look.” Mo leaned back, gazing up at me excitedly. “Your aura is brown!” My brows dipped in confusion as I leaned on my crutches. “What does that mean?” “Must be from your shit attitude.” She hummed to herself, content to keep working.
I kicked myself for noticing his dimple showing. A man should not be allowed to be that attractive.
As he started hobbling for the door, I refused to meet Nimue’s eyes, not ready to face the understanding I knew I’d find there.
“Where’s the wood?” Selene finished clearing off the stove and looked around the space. So many jokes, so little time.
“Flores.” I couldn’t help lifting my eyes to his, the green gone as bright as I’d ever seen them where his face loomed over mine. “You got needs, you come to me.”
“You get this wet on your own, Flores?” He nibbled my neck where it met my shoulder, his voice raspy against my skin. “Or is this only for me?”
“Toothless cold-turkey quit his meds yesterday and is a joy to be around.”
“So what’s your soul song? MMMBop?” Ryker retorted, and I bit my cheeks to keep from laughing over the fact that Ryker even knew MMMBop.
The more I watched this terrible reenactment of the pottery scene from Ghost at my kitchen table, the more my blood boiled.
“Careful, Ronan. If the next words out of your mouth are another insult to Selene, I’ll rip out your tongue and use it for shark bait.”
“I always do love some misplaced male aggression. Particularly in movies, not so much in real life. You’re all a bit whinier in person, I find.”
“Her aura is much clearer, and she’ll recover. Ronan, time for you two to head back underwater to Gungan City.” Ronan’s brow creased in confusion as he stared at Mo, obviously missing the Star Wars reference.
“And under no circumstances will I repay the kindness that you’ve shown me — even when I didn’t want or deserve it — by sending you out alone to find a murderer. Do not bring it up again.”
“News flash, Norbert, you’re also out of commission. Plus, I’m not signing up to ride you for a cross-country flight.”
“Trust me, Flores,” a sly grin spread across his face, that stupid dimple showing up yet again, “I’m far more experienced than anyone you’ve ever been with. I know exactly how to handle all of the buttons and gears to make your ride as smooth and satisfying as possible. You’ll never forget it. After this, any other pilots you might have, any flight you take, all you’ll be able to think about is me. Nothing else will ever compare.”
“What millennial girl didn’t have an emo phase as a teen? Evanescence was an anthem for our whole generation, and also apparently for ancient angsty dragons.”
“Grab the roll bars above you.”
For the first time in a thousand years, this tiny, beautiful witch made me want to make someone mine.
Sun now set, we watched the stars come out, snowflakes swirling through the air, and I wondered if maybe, even after a millennium, a dragon could be capable of unlearning solitude.
“You riding with Ryker?” West asked, and I started to answer, but Ryker beat me to it. “She’s with me.” His tone was full of gravel. “She’s always with me, Larkin.”
But, damn the man, he was still fine as hell.
“You can’t die.” “I don’t plan on it.” I forced a smile, but knew it didn’t reach my eyes. “But I’m not taking this gun. You’ll just have to defend me yourself, Drogon.”
Somehow, the tiny witch bleeding out on the ground in front of me had become my world, and nothing else mattered anymore, not even my demon quarry.
“Hush, little witchling, don’t say a word, Mama Mo’s gonna slay you a big black bird.”
They hadn’t seen Selene crumple to the ground with a bullet hole in her side because I’d failed to protect her. They hadn’t seen the way her eyes closed as pain pulled her from consciousness. They hadn’t seen the way her back arched off the ground when I’d fucking poisoned her.
“Don’t be like me, Ryker,” Orion said from closer behind me than before. His words caught me off-guard, and I turned a quizzical look at the mayor. His hands were stuffed into his pockets, wings tight behind him as he surveyed the town that was his pride and joy. “Don’t put yourself so dead last that you never actually live life.”
“I’ve lived over a thousand years, Orion. I’ve done enough living for several lifetimes.” Orion tilted his head, turning towards me. “Have you, though?”
Which is worse? Having her for only a short time, or not at all?”
Mo had left earlier that morning after taking care of my every need in a way I desperately needed, but never would have vocalized.
When would it be my turn? Would it ever be my turn? Or was I destined to die alone?
Of all of the injuries I’d suffered, the one to my heart hurt the worst.
“I’m still terrified, Selene. But for you — I’m going to learn how to do this. It won’t be perfect, it won’t happen right away, but I’ll learn how to be the male you deserve. To be everything you need. But I’ve been on my own a long time, and I might need some help, and I’ll definitely need your patience. Let me love you, Flores.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “Fall for me, Selene.”
“Call it doctor-patient confidentiality. Your secret’s safe with me.”
