Over time, I started to internalize that difference as something wrong. Something shameful. Something I ought to never tell anybody else about. So I kept my life a secret. I told myself I could never have a play date, or even a single birthday party, because then my classmates would find out! That’s how obsessed I was with keeping my life a secret.
