The puja, dedicated to the previous Mahadev Lord Rudra, was usually conducted to ward off negative energy. There was one other reason. Lord Rudra was one of the greatest warriors the world has ever seen, and they sought his blessings before a war. The puja was being conducted on a flat promontory-type sandy patch of land that extended in a northeasterly direction on Pamban Island.
