It bothered me I was aware of her. Not merely aware, but … like all the north-seeking poles of my atoms lined up in the same direction whenever she was near, trying to pull me toward her like a magnet. It made no sense. I barely knew her. And I intended to keep it that way.
“Talk until you’re hoarse. It doesn’t bother me.” I liked Sloane’s voice. I liked her laughter best but didn’t seem able to provoke it like others could.
“You don’t have to eat my cakes, you know.” I grunted at that and handed her the mug of peppermint tea. “And the earth doesn’t need to orbit the sun.” She chuckled again, and I turned back to my tea, a smile of triumph pulling at my mouth.
Butterflies erupted in my belly. Because Walker Ironside was full-on grinning at me. I’d never seen him smile like that.
Walker’s trademark scowl slotted right back into place. “You don’t owe me anything.” I grinned. “Now I don’t.” His lips twitched again.
“The girl”—I wiped my hands over my cheeks as I held Walker’s gaze—“she was Allegra Howard.” Understanding dawned. “Wesley Howard’s daughter. Aria’s sister.”
“Callie is the luckiest wee girl in the world,” Walker uttered gruffly, “to have a mum like you. You’re a warrior, Sloane. Never doubt it.”
His kiss was ravaging. Possessive. Dark, deep, and sexual. His beard prickled softly against my skin.
At that moment, he reminded me of that Scottish flower—the thistle. There were all these prickles on the stem and leaves before you could get to the pretty flower. That was Walker. You had to look beyond his gruffness to see he was a caring, good man.
“I’ve never been in a relationship, Sloane. I don’t know if I know how to be in one. But if it’s enough for you to know I want to try, then stay with me.”
“I’m yours,” I whispered. He lifted his head, his face slack with wonder. “I’m yours,” he promised me back.
“Will you be okay today?” His expression softened. “Do you love me?” A shy smile prodded my lips. “Yes.” “Then I’m more than okay.”
“You mine again?” I swear my pulse fluttered. “I’m yours again. Are you mine again?” Walker squeezed my knee once more. “Never stopped being yours.”
“Did the bullet do something to your vision?” “Aye. Made it crystal fucking clear.”
