Fall in love? Ha. As if. That shit would never happen to me. Elle was hot, that was all. I would never love her. I’d never let my heart care for anyone again.
“Are you the boss of me?” I said, sounding mature as hell. “I’d like to be,” he said, heat entering his eyes and sending an SOS to my lower parts.
Elle joined at his side, her face lighting up for a split second. That moment of joy was enough to fuel me the rest of the day.
He beamed, full-on, and oh baby. Yup. Sun. I was a little planet orbiting him, pulling toward him. “Jesus, put that away.” I covered my eyes and stepped back.
Cal laughed. Cal Holt, serious grumpy-ass Cal, laughed. The sound was magical. Could probably solve world hunger with it.
Elle’s eyes filled with moisture, red painting her cheeks before she closed the distance between us and wrapped her arms around my middle. She rested her head against my chest, and I froze. A full body hug? It had been years. She squeezed me and wouldn’t let go. “Elle.” “Hug me back, damnit.”
I couldn’t take it. Fuck all the reasons this was stupid. If I didn’t kiss him on the mouth, I would die. I was certain. I cupped his face with my hands and stood on my tiptoes, and I finally fucking kissed him.
“Wake up, let me fight your demons for you,” I said, kissing her temple.
I loved Cal Holt, and even if he didn’t say it back, he could take my love with him wherever he went. It was about time I took the reins of my own romance story.
“You’re amazing,” I said, needing him to understand how much I meant it. “Your dedication, your mind, your heart. I’m lucky I get a part of it.” “You own it.” His voice was more intense, aggressive. “You own my heart, Elle. Be careful with it, please.”
