Hercules’s shade

The Phaeacian punishment

Any one but yourself on returning from so long a voyage would at once have gone home to see his wife and children, but you do not seem to care about asking after them or hearing any news about them till you have exploited your wife, who remains at home vainly grieving for you, and having no peace night or day for the tears she sheds on your behalf.

Odysseus decides to decapitate the nobility of his own kingdom.

“Begin,” said he, “to remove the dead, and make the women help you. Then, get sponges and clean water to swill down the tables and seats. When you have thoroughly cleansed the whole cloisters, take the women into the space between the domed room and the wall of the outer court, and run them through with your swords till they are quite dead, and have forgotten all about love and the way in which they used to lie in secret with the suitors.”

Odysseus punishes slaves who had no agency in the matter.

Ulysses in his turn told her what he had suffered, and how much trouble he had himself given to other people.

Meanwhile I want to see whether my father will know me, or fail to recognize me after so long an absence.”

“My friend, this man has done the Achaeans great wrong. He took many of our best men away with him in his fleet, and he has lost both ships and men; now, moreover, on his return he has been killing all the foremost men among the Cephallenians.

He hit Eupeithes’ helmet, and the spear went right through it, for the helmet stayed it not, and his armour rang rattling round him as he fell heavily to the ground.

“Men of Ithaca,” she cried, cease this dreadful war, and settle the matter at once without further bloodshed.”
