The application of ‘trigger warnings’ has been common practice in universities since at least 2013. These can range from literary works on English Literature courses to the study of rape cases in law schools. One professor at Harvard University writes how a colleague was ‘asked by a student not to use the word “violate” in class – as in “Does this conduct violate the law?” – because the word was triggering’.
