Mr. Smith was not involved in his children’s lives much more than discipline and religious training. When a child did something really bad, he was the one to discipline. Mr. Smith’s idea of discipline was extreme. The church taught persuasion through love, which did not include physical punishment, a mere suggestion to most parents in the church who regularly used physical punishment.
