My book was about murder. A mystery novel to help keep my mind occupied rather than dwelling on my problems. I liked romance as much as the next girl but needed something darker and more compelling. Something more relatable to the state of my life.
Is it so unrealistic to expect men to be decent human beings?
“Believe me, I am. There is absolutely nothing civilized about me.”
If I’d had to guess, I would have said defending himself against angry goons was an everyday occurrence. He was the picture of cool indifference,
The Mafia twisted men into monsters. It drained all their humanity and left their souls hopelessly disfigured.
He probably doubted the existence of anything he hadn’t experienced himself—like empathy and compassion. Such a bleak, narrow-minded view of the world.
It made me want to light the entire city on fire.
“No, she was in a car accident six months ago. Her mother was killed in the wreck, and Noemi’s vocal cords were damaged. She’s mute and, from what I hear, pretty traumatized. No clue why her father nominated her. She’s hardly been seen outside of her house since it happened.”
“I’m not planning to fuck you against your will, Noemi. I don’t need to coerce sex from a woman when plenty of others give it freely.”
They didn’t like to share, and they certainly didn’t want to allow their women to stray, but if I was going to suffer the embarrassment of a cheating husband, I should at least get to have some fun of my own.
I wanted to be with a man who wanted me, not just used me for sex.
“What is it that you doubt? That you’d want sex or that I could fulfill your needs? Because I’d be happy to prove you wrong on both counts.”
My hopes and dreams meant no more than the breeding ability of livestock.
Waiting for me with my usual breakfast is dangerously close to a romantic gesture.
I don’t really care what you call it, so long as those pretty lips end up panting my name.”
“Keep sucking that finger. You’re going to need the practice.”
“Protective is one thing. I get the sense this is more, and I think I ought to know if it’s going to be a problem.”
“Good, because I’m not remotely gentle.”
but the thought of anyone but me laying a finger on Noemi made me itch with the need to paint her entire family tree in shades of red.
No voice doesn’t mean no opinions.
Man or woman, I see someone touching you in a way I don’t like, I’ll cut their fucking fingers off.”
“No, I said turnabout was fair play. That means if I stray, you can, too. But for right now, there’s only one set of legs I want between, and as long as that’s the case, I expect the same in return.”
I didn’t just want to fuck my fiancée; I wanted all of her. Her body and submission. Her trust and compliance. Even her fiery temper and sarcasm.
It was time to make the caged bird sing, one way or another.
I was a bird in a cage, desperate to break free. Every demand was another collar around my neck.
“Duty to my family. The acquisition of power. Sultry green eyes and a fiery disposition. You pick a day; I’ll give you a reason. It changes by the minute.”
“Just keep those eyes straight ahead on me. Don’t think about anyone else, yeah?”
“You look good enough to eat, Noemi.” He brought his lips to my ear. “And I’m famished.”
He’d been showing me the whole time that he valued me beyond a simple contract,
“Better to get what I needed than what I thought I wanted.”
