So we have a choice: be offended by Jesus Himself, or embrace the breathtaking unfairness of the kingdom. The unfairness of it all is exactly what the older, jealous brother was complaining about in Jesus’ story about the prodigal son. There’s something in us that wants our salvation to come through us.
If you’re constantly being hurt, offended, or angered, you should honestly evaluate your inflamed ego.
“Peace! That’s great. But you know what? I’d rather have nonstop news coverage, stirring up my righteous anger,” we say. Sure, the Jesus way of living and forgiving brings peace. But we opt out. And we suffer for it.
“God, thank You. Thank You, thank You, thank You.” That’s the resource for forgiving others. While forgiveness can benefit anyone of any religious or irreligious sensibility, I’m convinced the only way to really make this work, the only bedrock logical basis for this lifestyle, is our own forgiveness in Christ.
