In the moment before she died, Eleanor Johnson gripped a single thought long enough to fill her last breath with bitterness: which one of those scheming bastards poisoned me?
Linda
Classic whodunnit. I'm ready for it.

“What do you want me to do?” “Just, I don’t know, observe. I can’t offer any money, but as payment I’ll let you take me out to dinner.” Austin raised an eyebrow. “Okay fine, I’ll take you out to dinner.” He said nothing. She tried again. “I’ll cook you dinner.” He smirked. “Definitely not, then.”
Linda
Hehe I ship 'em.

Suddenly, he snapped and stood up. “I’ve got it!” “What?” Anna asked. “I know how we can prove the Johnson family is evil and therefore must have killed her.” She looked skeptical. “How?” “They don’t allow pets in the house. Any family like that must be full of cold-blooded killers.”
Linda
Lol he's so adorable

“Well, if you have no faith in God, in a higher power, isn’t it all just nothingness? Good and evil, truth and lies. Without faith, why does anything matter?”

“Who is he?” Lucy asked. “I mean, I’d take his autograph just to stand next to him.” “Hey!” Jimmy said. “I’m standing right here.” Lucy looked him up and down. “You’re adequate.”

A new track name flashed on the wall behind Kyon. His new song was called “Death to Grandmas.”

Austin stepped toward him, eyes hard. “Ever heard of yellow oleander?” A slow smile spread across Kyon’s face, then suddenly his look turned angry and he kicked Austin in the shin. Austin’s leg gave out and he fell to one knee. When he looked up, Kyon was halfway down the hall. A moment later, he burst through an exit and disappeared into the bright day.
Linda
Well now that's VERY sus. But also too easy, so it's probably not him. Tho why run?

“Well, you know about her husband, right? Ex-husband, I mean.” “I’ve heard he wasn’t a great guy.” “He, well… know what, it’s not my story to tell. All I’ll say is that she's earned my respect. Plus, she’s not hard on the eyes. And, most importantly, she likes you. I’m sure that’s exceedingly rare.” Austin set down his coffee cup. “Very rare.”
Linda
Nah! I like you too, Austin!

“I know Rid vouches for you, which I appreciate. But a word of advice. In my city, leave it to the actual officers to apprehend suspects, okay?” Austin didn’t respond. Anna said, “Maybe if you’d figured out this was murder a week ago, amateurs like us wouldn’t have to chase suspects through your city.”
Linda
Oh ho ho lol. Go Anna

“We were hoping you’d pull up his address for us,” Austin said. Jackson scoffed. “But you knew I wouldn’t.” Austin smiled. “I choose to believe anything is possible. Had a fortune cookie tell me that once.”

Jimmy sipped from a green bottle labeled 333 Premium Beer. “Before we go any further, I’d like to announce that this is in no way a ‘double date.’ Lucy has made it abundantly clear to me that—though I have the body of a Greek God—I am too dumb for her.” Lucy slapped his shoulder. “That is not what I said.” Jimmy raised an eyebrow. Lucy poked at her cocktail with a little white straw. “I said you’re waaaay too dumb for me.” Jimmy leaned back, clutching at his heart like he’d been struck by an arrow. “That hurt more than getting stabbed in the belly with a kitchen knife.” Anna laughed. “When are ...more

“I didn’t notice them following us on the way here. And I was looking. That means they somehow landed on us while we were inside the restaurant.” “But how?”
Linda
Surely not tipped off by Jimmy or Lucy, right?

Mack stood and looked slowly around the room, making eye contact with each family member one by one. “One thing I can tell you all for certain is that Eleanor did not kill John, or have him killed.” He sank back down into his seat. Defeated. “But I did it. I killed her. I had to. The family name was on the line—John’s name, all of your names—and I love you all too much to let her get away with that.”
Linda
Oh. Well that was easy, I guess.

She caught up to him in the hallway. “What was that about? Why do you want Samantha running facial recognition on a dude who died fifty years ago?” Austin opened the wide front door, which was so heavy it required a genuine shove to open. “How sure are we that’s John Johnson in the picture?”
Linda
Ooh. Intriguing.
