Many victims made frantic escapes like that of Eliza and the children. A number of families made short-term decisions for individuals to leave immediately after they were attacked. Absconding saved lives and gave survivors a chance to report the violence to local and state authorities who might end it. But dislocation also deprived family members of the social and economic support they needed after a strike. Displacement put families in financial free fall.
